Probiscope Butterfly field lab & journal

Explore a curated species atlas, log sightings with photos and GPS, link butterflies to nectar plants, run timed meadow surveys, and keep lab notes — all on your device. No account required.

100% local journal
0 accounts needed
5 field tabs

Everything a careful field session needs, in one place.

Probiscope turns scattered sightings, sticky notes, and half-remembered wing patterns into a structured field record you can trust — from atlas to survey to export.

01

Species Atlas

Browse butterflies with field photos, wing patterns, habitats, and phenology notes. Bundled content stays available offline once loaded.

02

Field Log

Record observations with optional photos, location, habitat tags, weather context, and notes. Export a PDF field report for any entry.

03

Flora Link

Connect nectar plants with butterfly visitors, pollen loads, and microbiome-style field notes in one observation flow.

04

Lab Bench

Use practical tools for wing symmetry, proboscis estimates, pollen color, flight periods, and sequential specimen IDs.

05

Field Survey

Run a timed meadow survey, count species in real time, and keep the session visible on the Lock Screen with Live Activity.

06

Widgets & export

Add a Home Screen widget for recent field activity. Back up your catalog as JSON anytime — your journal stays yours.

Built for people who watch wings carefully.

Probiscope is an independent butterfly field companion for iPhone and iPad. We built it for naturalists, students, and citizen scientists who want one calm place to identify species, log sightings, and keep lab notes — without accounts or cloud clutter.

Inside the app you browse the Species Atlas, keep a Field Log, link plants in Flora Link, run Lab Bench tools, and time surveys with Live Activity. Your observations, photos, and exports stay on your device.

Probiscope is not affiliated with GBIF, Wikimedia Commons, Open-Meteo, or any conservation agency. Optional occurrence lookups and imagery may load from public sources when a network connection is available.

Your field journal never leaves your hands.

Probiscope is designed around local storage. We do not operate user accounts, and we do not sell your personal information.

Effective date: July 17, 2026 · Last updated: July 17, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how Probiscope (the "Application") handles information when you use our butterfly field lab app. The Application is provided by David Tamayo, California, United States ("we", "us", or "our").

Information We Collect

Probiscope does not require an account, sign-up, or login. We do not run third-party analytics or advertising trackers. We do not operate a server that receives your field journal.

The following data is stored locally on your device only:

  • Field observations, survey sessions, and lab results you create
  • Optional photos you attach to observations
  • Optional GPS coordinates when you choose to geotag an observation
  • App preferences (such as default region)
  • Cached species imagery and optional public-API responses
  • Live Activity and widget snapshots shared via the app group on your device

Device Permissions

Camera, Photo Library, and Location (When In Use) are requested only when you use related features. You can log observations without granting these permissions. Location is used to geotag field records you choose to save — it is not continuously tracked for advertising.

Optional Network Features

When you have a network connection, the Application may request public information from:

  • GBIF — recent occurrence records for a scientific name
  • Open-Meteo — current weather for geotagged observations
  • Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons — optional reference imagery and summaries

These requests send only what is needed for the lookup (for example, a scientific name or coordinates). Your personal journal, photos, and export files are not uploaded to our servers — we do not operate such servers.

How We Use Information

Because we do not collect personal data on our servers, there is nothing for us to profile, share, or sell. All core features — Atlas, Field Log, Flora Link, Lab Bench, and Survey — operate using data stored on your device.

Data Storage & Retention

All of your content remains in the app's private storage on your device (and the shared app group used by widgets and Live Activities). There is no cloud sync operated by us. You may export a JSON backup or PDF reports yourself. Deleting the app permanently removes associated local data.

Live Activities & Widgets

If you enable Live Activity or add a Home Screen widget, those features use Apple's system frameworks on your device. We do not receive the content of your Lock Screen or widget data on our servers.

Children's Privacy

The Application does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Because no personal data is collected or transmitted to us, the app aligns with COPPA and similar standards for on-device tools.

Your Control

You can edit or delete observations, clear attachments, export or import your archive, or uninstall the Application to remove all stored content from your device.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy to reflect app improvements or legal requirements. When we do, we will revise the effective date above. The core commitment — local storage, no accounts, no sale of personal data — will not change without clear notice.
